ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
Instituto Ágora Perene (IAP) is a cultural institute and non-profit association that works on teaching and think tank projects. Its mission and values are to fill gaps in the field of high culture and classical and traditional studies in Brazil.
WHAT ARE CLASSICAL AND TRADITIONAL STUDIES?
Classical and Traditional Studies are an important field of human knowledge left as a historical legacy of civilization. It is, therefore, a perennially accumulated millennial knowledge, the common heritage of humanity, which involves an integral, unified and interdisciplinary vision of the human being, nature and society.
More precisely, the classical and traditional worldview has been expressed in the history of Western thought through diverse authors such as Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Plotinus, Dante Alighieri and Camões. Also worthy of note are authors from the Eastern world, such as Confucius, Avicenna, Ibn Arabi and Shankaracharya.
Therefore, it is a field that encompasses the studies of metaphysical philosophy (both Western and Eastern), physics, anthropology and ethics, disciplines that constitute the theoretical trunk of the modernnatural and socialsciences (sociology, economics, psychology and law).
Tt also covers the humanistic and literary studies of the Trivium (Rhetoric, Logic and Grammar) and Quadrivium (Arithmetic, Geometry, Music and Astronomy), which constituted the preparatory corpus for classical and traditional philosophical training.
In short, like a tree, classical and traditional knowledge constitutes an evergreen trunk from which various disciplines of knowledge have branched out throughout the history of human thought, which have repercussions to this day through science, literature, art, politics and society.
